Health benefits of drinking water

Water is the most important natural drink on the face of this earth. Neither any fruit juice nor any of the man-made drinks even come close to rivaling its importance in our diet. Drinking a lot of water daily contributes to a healthy lifestyle for the following reasons:

Water is a natural appetite suppressant. Drinking water abates food cravings to a large extent and therefore can be useful in maintaining a healthy weight.
All functions in the body require water. Keeping the body well-hydrated enables these functions to be carried out more efficiently. Thus the metabolic rate of the body is also improved. This in turn burns more fat and calories.
Studies have shown that the brain initiates thirst and hunger sensations together. Thus, even if the body requires water only, the brain will initiate both responses together. The person thus tends to eat while in fact the body is thirsty. This, of course, results in weight gain with all of its detrimental consequences. It is therefore wise to consume water first before eating in order to see whether the craving abates.

When we drink a lot of water, there is a natural tendency to avoid other liquids. Most of these liquids are calorie-dense (e.g. sodas, milk etc.). This contributes a lot to weight loss.

Water is key for the overall function of the body:
It is an important part of essential body fluids such as saliva, tears, and blood.
It regulates body temperature by getting rid of excess heat through the sweat. It enables smooth joint movement as it forms part of the liquid that surrounds the joints.

Research has shown that drinking water contributes to the overall health of the person. People who drink lots of water have been found to be less susceptible for developing colon cancer, bladder cancer and even breast cancer.
